There is no doubt that South Africa has become one of the premier destinations for tourists from all over the world. With the country’s rich, vibrant culture and amazing natural attractions, not to mention its famous animals, it’s not surprising that South Africa continues to attract visitors of all ages who all want a slice of adventure on their travels.
Whilst there may be plenty of national parks in South Africa, there is one national park which definitely stands out: Kruger National Park. The Park boasts an array of sights and activities for visitors, ranging from catching a glimpse of the Big Five to camping and hot air balloon rides.
Let’s take a look at some of the most popular sights and activities anyone visiting the Park can enjoy:
Spending time in a cultural village and visiting a cultural heritage site
When it comes to culture, South Africa is undoubtedly unique. And you can experience this vivid, exciting culture first-hand with a visit to one of the Park’s cultural villages. In the Park, visitors can spend time in one of its various cultural villages, which includes Tsonga, Ndebele, San, Venda, Shangaan, and Pedi. These villages showcase what it’s like to live on the land without relying too much on modern technology – visitors to any village can see women making butter or creating their intricate beads, and even get the opportunity to dance and eat with the villagers and simply spend a day getting to know their way of life.(image by Retlaw Snellac Photography)
Another way to spend the day in the Park is by visiting one of its cultural heritage sites, Thulamela, an Iron Age-era site complete with ancient graves and evidence of farming and trade that span back centuries.
Taking a hot air balloon ride
Hot air balloon rides are popular virtually anywhere in the world, but there’s nothing quite like going up in the air in this national park and seeing its beautiful vista spread out in all its grandeur before you. The Park offers hot air balloon rides where you can see various animal herds traveling over the vast landscape whilst appreciating the clean, fresh air and the magnificent view of hills and forests. The best time to take a hot air balloon ride is at dawn, so you can see the sun rising over the horizon.
Going on a traditional South African braai
A braai is one activity you shouldn’t miss when you’re in South Africa. Basically, in Afrikaans, a braai is a traditional roast or barbecue, and is considered one of the country’s most popular customs. If you would really like to experience an authentic cultural vibe, you can do so with a bush braai in the Park. Visitors take a guided night drive, where they are driven to a clearing where the braai is prepared under the stars, with only fires and lanterns for illumination. This makes for an amazing food experience as well, and it is also completely safe and adventurous.(image by The Backpack Cape Town)
Aside from the above-mentioned sights and activities, Kruger National Park offers an array of activities such as wilderness trails, bush walks, safaris, bird-watching, camping, museum visits, and more. You will certainly find something to do and see in this national park which will make your visit even more memorable, exciting, and fun.
