road tripA road trip is a fantastic way to explore and is the ideal holiday for couples, families and groups of friends. America is one of the best places to embark on such an adventure. With its long highways, stunning natural features and numerous places of interest, the US could well be considered the birthplace of the road trip. One of the first such journeys was taken in 1903 from San Francisco to New York City, and it took an epic sixty-three days in a Winton touring car. The present-day holidaymaker can enjoy the benefits of modern mechanics, and the experiences of those millions of people who take an American road trip every year. Here we will take a look at the best American road trips on offer.

For those looking to connect with nature, try this fantastic road trip from Anchorage to Homer. The journey is three hundred and fifty kilometres, and there are plenty of activities to try along the way. Make sure you hire a high-clearance vehicle that can handle the more rugged terrain. At Anchorage, get acclimatised to your surroundings by hiking the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, one of many free attractions to enjoy. If you prefer cycling, there is a maze of trails to be found further on at the Alyeska Resort. Off the main route, Seward is the perfect base for fishing or ice climbing. At Sterling, warm yourselves with a visit to the High Mark Distillery and stock up on some Blind Cat Moonshine or Nickel Back Apple Jack. Travel on to Homer, where there are opportunities for paddleboarding amongst glaciers and kayaking in waters home to orcas and humpback whales.
