How to Save Money on Last-Minute Travel

June 20, 2017 |

Most travelers know that preparation can save a lot of money. But there are times when you do not have time to prepare, and last minute arrangements can be pretty expensive. But there are ways to save money even at the last minute.

Check Other Airports

The most convenient option is not always the cheapest option. Often, you can find a cheaper flight by filtering for all airports within a certain radius. It might require an extra hour or two of driving, but it could be worth it if it saves money.

Bereavement Fares

Airlines are usually willing to accommodate travelers mourning a deceased family member by providing bereavement fares. While they might require that you make the arrangements at least a few days in advance, that should be sufficient to get you there in time for the funeral service.

Set A Travel Budget

Flight and hotel prices are usually not the only expenses during travel. You will also have to confront the price of food, gas, entertainment, and probably a few other things. Set a travel budget to accommodate all of that. It might be wise to go to the grocery store while you are in town rather than eating out for every meal.

Take A Red-Eye Flight

A benefit of the red-eye flight is that nobody will be at the airport, so getting through security should be a quick process. Nobody wants to fly in the middle of the night or at the crack of dawn. Consequently, ticket prices will likely be cheaper.

Condense Your Luggage Into One Bag

This is especially true if you are going on a short trip. You probably do not need to bring your stamp collection on the plane. Try to bring just one bag.

Check Social Media

Sometimes airlines will post last minute flight deals on their social media account. Search for all of the possible airlines and browse through their recent posts.

Direct Booking

Again, people are willing to pay internet travel agencies for the convenience. But you could save money if you book directly through the hotels and airlines. It will also help you to gain reward points and you might even be eligible for an upgrade. Something to keep in mind about this will be that you will have to look closely at your itinerary. Travel agency websites try to ensure that they are giving you a feasible itinerary with enough time to catch a connecting flight. Just do a little research.

Do Not Panic About The Money

That suggestion will help both your mental health and your credit score. Sometimes in this situation, people will make rash decisions to get a little extra cash, like taking out a short term loan. If a loan is an absolute necessity, then so be it. But as a general principle, you should avoid loans because they will cost you more money when you pay the interest back. Further, if you are in a state of panic about the travel expenses, you might not be thinking clearly enough to make that sort of financial decision.

Stay calm and rational about your travel expenses so that you can find the best deals. Last minute travel might not be ideal, but you can get through it if you manage your finances wisely.
