They wriggle around, smell funny and emit ear-piercing screams on a regular basis. We can only be talking about one thing; children. Whether you love them, hate them, have your own or spend your life avoiding them; there is certainly no escaping them, especially when the school holidays roll around.
If you’ve not yet been blessed with little treasures of your own, or indeed if the ones you do have are driving you to the edge of despair, there are ways to enjoy a blissful adults-only holiday EVEN when school is out and the kids have been let loose for the summer. This is our advice on how.
Cruise holidays are a perfect way to avoid kids; if you don’t stay in one place for too long, they can’t find you! Joking aside, cruise lines including understand that not everyone chooses a holiday for the kid’s club, and have introduced luxury adults-only ships to their fleets. A peaceful ambience is guaranteed aboard the ship, with itineraries and amenities designed with adult passengers in mind. While you certainly won’t find party pools and kid’s clubs, you will find deck-top retreats, serene spas and lively lounges.
Though not deemed to be exclusively for adults, a river cruise through Europe or Asia tends to attract very few families, if any at all. Offering a much smaller and more intimate cruising experience to ocean cruise ships, river cruise ships allow you to go straight to the heart of a destination, giving you more time to explore cities and discover new cultures along the way. Luxury facilities and exceptional dining await on all river cruise ships, with a lack of children’s facilities proving just perfect for those looking to escape families in favour of a more relaxed experience.
Adult-only cruise holidays encourage you to enjoy amazing food, explore a new destination each day, relax in undisturbed peace by the pool or book that massage you never get round to having at home. Bliss!
There is nothing more frustrating than arriving in your spectacular all-inclusive resort for a chilled couple’s holiday, only to find that the kid’s club is busier than the bar. Do your research beforehand and you will quickly come across adults-only hideaways galore, including this exclusive retreat from Hotel Chocolat.
Boucan by Hotel Chocolat sits in the imposing shadow of the Pitons in Soufriere, Saint Lucia, and thanks to its mountain position is an adult hideaway. A story exists of Hotel Chocolat’s co-founder enjoying a rum in the grounds of Rabot Estate, home of the Hotel Chocolat Plantation. As the evening wore on and the rum continued to flow, he hitched a plan to let Hotel Chocolat customers experience the very same thing. And so, Boucan by Hotel Chocolat was born.
The hotel’s five star all-lodge accommodation sits amidst the mountainous rainforest area of Soufriere, with private speedboats on hand to transport guests to beaches from the resort’s position 1,000ft above sea level. The hotel is a popular foodie destination and its cacao cuisine continues to use cacao as both a savoury and sweet ingredient, combining it with produce home grown on the Rabot Estate.
While children over 12 are accepted at the resort, its luxury offerings and mountainous position very rarely attract families.
Adult-Only Adrenaline Adventures
If endless sunsets and cocktails by the pool aren’t your thing, an adult-only adrenaline adventure may be more up your street.
While families flock to sun-soaked destinations abroad, opt for a British staycation in Pembrokeshire National Park. Here, you will find Preseli Venture taking adult-only groups on an adventure around the coastline that includes hiking, kayaking, surfing, kite boarding and horse riding. You will also have the opportunity to experience coasteering; an action packed combination of cave exploration, cliff jumping, rock gully swimming, rock scrambling and wave riding.
Don’t expect to rough it in between your fun-filled days; you will spend your evenings under starry skies with beach walks and bonfires (marshmallows included), and your nights in a 5 star eco lodge complete with table football, pool table and fully stocked bar.
Those looking for love can join Preseli Venture’s ‘Singles Adventure’ for a singles week away that focuses more on fun than flirting. That said, there is talk of marriages materialising from the Pembrokeshire adventures in the past, so love may well blossom between the beach walks and wave riding.
Michael Wilson is the Managing Director of Bolsover Cruise Club and has 2 children himself so a holiday with no kids is not on his agenda just yet!
